Revitilise your Living Room

Revitilise your Living Room

With open plan living so popular in Kiwi homes, our ‘living rooms’ have not only increased in size, but they’ve also become the space where we congregate the most. That translates into heavy duty wear and tear. To help turn that around, here are some low budget living room reviving ideas.

Rearrange the Furniture

Rearranging furniture is definitely a case of ‘same, same but different’. This type of activity is best done with a fellow home décor enthusiast who can bring a fresh perspective to different furniture combinations. They can also help with the shifting. I’ve included a link to a great better homes & gardens article to help get the ideas flowing.

Throw caution to the wind

Throw pillows, ceramics, and coffee table books are all great mediums to change up the tempo of your living space. Add bold splashes of colour, or pear things back to create a monochrome zone. Add layers of beautiful textures and cluster collectibles together, or declutter the space for a minimalist sanctuary to emerge.

Update the Artwork

Wall art is another way to add life to your living room. The selection of a new piece of wall art should always complement your overall home décor style both in terms of theme and colour palette. The size of an individual art piece, or the collective size of a number of pieces hung as a group, will determine its impact on the room.

Lay it on the line

If you already have carpet or a substantial rug in place, think about creating some layers of interest with another rug. A small rug in a complementary or contrasting colour can really lift the tempo of the room and create a unifying theme for pillows and collectibles. Place it under a coffee table or between facing sofas to create a completely new feel.

Introduce some natural elements

Living or dried, faux or foraged, nature provides so many options for a living room makeover. Improve the air and add a living element to your room with some beautiful, structural houseplants. Add an architectural element with ikebana-inspired artistry using some twigs and native grasses. Enlist the support of a floral genius to help create a show piece faux flower arrangement. Shells, stones, leaves, feathers … there is so much that can be gathered and integrated into a seasonal theme. Just jump on Pinterest for inspiration.

Splash some paint around with Paint

I often use the Christmas holiday break to repaint another room in the house. I’m not sure how many times I’ve painted the same space but it is a relatively quick and affordable way to completely transform a room. Painting furniture is another option and is particularly fun with thrifted items. A quick trawl through YouTube will teach you everything you need to know to get a great finish.

Let the living room makeover begin!
